CONTEMPORARY
Inter/Tween/Teen/ Elite

Primary School Grade 3 & above

Contemporary and Lyrical classes are designed for dancers who enjoy combining strong technique with emotional expression and musical interpretation. These styles blend elements of ballet, jazz, and modern dance, encouraging students to move with intention, fluidity, and connection to the music.

Classes include a structured warm-up, flexibility and strength conditioning, suspension and release, articulation, travelling sequences, floor work, improvisation, and fundamental technical combinations. Students learn how to explore dynamics, quality of movement, and expressive performance while continuing to develop safe and efficient technique.

During Terms 1 and 2, classes focus on building and refining technical skills, strength, control, and movement quality. In Terms 3 and 4, students apply these skills to learning Contemporary and Lyrical routines for the end-of-year concerts.

Alongside Contemporary classes, students are strongly encouraged to participate in Ballet classes at UCANDANCE, as ballet provides the technical foundation, alignment, strength, and control required for Contemporary and Lyrical dance.
Contemporary classes are not offered to Minis or Petites, as dancers must have the necessary technical training, physical strength, and maturity to participate safely and correctly in this style.

All students enrolled in Contemporary must also be currently attending Ballet or Jazz classes at UCANDANCE. Ballet technique and jazz foundations are essential for supporting safe, strong, and progressive development in Contemporary dance.
Contemporary is a mainstream concert class.
Students will perform two routines in the end-of-year concerts.
